my favourite day - chinese new year
A short story

Chinese New Year is celebrated in many countries around the world. Each new year is named after one of twelve animals. 2008 was the year of the rat. 2009 is the year of the ox. People born in the year of the ox are strong and work hard. They are also patient and loyal to their friends.

Listen to a girl telling us about why she likes Chinese New Year, and what she does at this time.

Find out if you are a dog, a dragon or one of the other animals of the Chinese Zodiac!

MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT CHINESE NEW YEAR

We asked some children in Hong Kong to tell us what they liked most about Chinese New Year. Find out just what a red pocket is and lots more. Here's what they told us.

My favourite thing about Chinese New Year is ...

… ‘lucky money’. People put money in a red pocket, it is called pocket money or Lucky Money. When I have Lucky Money I’m very happy.
… visiting relatives. New year is the time we eat candies and lucky money is given by parents or relatives. It is also the time we watch the fireworks. I think it is a very meaningful festival. Sometimes we eat turnip cakes and rice cake since we think these will bring us luck. People say ‘Kung Hei Fat Choi’ to me.
… is getting the ‘lucky money’, buying new clothes, eating turnip cakes and eating candy.
…eating Chinese pudding because it is yummy and tasty.
… watching fireworks.
… saying ‘kung hei fat choi’ to other people because I want to wish them happy new year.
… watching the lion dances. Two people are inside it. I think it is difficult to do. After you watch you will be very happy.
…  that I can play with my mummy and daddy, because my mummy and daddy are always very busy!

Thanks to all the kids in Hong Kong who took time to tell us about Chinese New Year.

Children will give wish for their parents and relatives. At about 11pm, we return to our home, prepare sugar-coated, worship the ancestor and wait to watch the fireworks. The fireworks begin at 12pm, we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new year. My family prefer to watch it at home because at that time, the streets are very crowded. Then, my parents will go to the pagoda to pray for happiness, good health, wealth and luck for the family. We often stay up late and get up late the next morning. The first day of the new year, we wear new clothes with bright colors such as red. We don't sweep the floor and comb our hair for three day, because if you sweep the floor, your fortune will go out of the door. We visit our relatives, friends and children receive lucky money. In Tet, we also have the special tree. At the North, they have the tree with pink flowers, we call that the Cherry tree. At the South, the flowers are yellow, and we call that Apricot. Tet is a traditional festival in Vietnam, when only the happiness and health come to us.
