IGCSE
University of Cambridge International Examinations

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been designed for 14 to 16 year olds. It aims to prepare students for further academic success, including progression to A and AS Level study, and equip them with skills for immediate employment. It is equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and is recognised as evidence of ability by academic institutions and employers worldwide.

Who can take the exam?
The British Council is a private candidate centre for IGCSE 'O' and 'A' level examinations.  Anyone who has followed the IGCSE syllabus may take the exams, though candidates may not register for components that require coursework or practical.  Instead, they register for Alternative to Practical and Alternative to Coursework components.  The British Council does not prepare candidates for these exams.

When can I register?
There are two registration periods for IGCSE, for the May/June sittings and for the November sittings.  You should register by the deadlines by 26 March (late penalty fee is applicable) for the May/June sittings and by 15th August for the November sittings.

How do I register?
To register, please visit a British Council Centre in either Nairobi or Mombasa.  We are open for registrations on any weekday from 8.00am to 4.00pm.  You should bring with you a passport size photograph.  You will need to complete the registration form and pay your fees.  Once you have done this, your entry form will be sent to Cambridge.  A letter confirming this will be sent to you within 5 days of the closing of registrations.

When is the exam?
You can get a general timetable for the exams from any of our centres.  Individual timetables are normally received from Cambridge after 3 weeks of the registration deadline.  As soon as these are received, you will receive your personal copy by post.  Usually the morning exams start at 9.00 am and the afternoon exams start at 2.00pm.  Any variation to these times will be communicated to you.  You should report for your exam at least 30 minutes earlier on the day.

What will it cost me?
IGCSE: Kshs 12,500 per subject
AS: 10,500 per subject
A level: Kshs 13,500 per subject

In addition to the above you will also need to pay the Kenya National Examinations Council Fee of Kshs 1,500 per candidate.

Where will the exam be held?
Exams are held at our centres in Nairobi and Mombasa.  If you intend to sit the exam in Mombasa, you should register for the exam at our centre in Mombasa.

How will I get my results?
The results for the exams are issued 2 months after the exam has taken place.  And Certificates are issued two months after the results have been issued.  You will be informed by post when your results and certificates are ready for collection.
