On 21 May Lena Milosevic, the Director of the British Council Kazakhstan, took part in the environmental campaign to revive a particular type of apple for which Almaty is famous `the Aport’. The campaign was initiated by the Kazakh National University named after Al Farabi and the British Alumni Club of Kazakhstan whose members have all studied in UK universities.
Participants of the campaign planted apple trees with the goal of attracting attention to the revival of the famous `Almaty Aport’ and to involve people in the greening of Almaty.
Alongside students and volunteers the campaign was supported by representatives of educational institutions such as Salzburg University and famous Kazakhstani artists for example singers Azamat Madgulov and Madina Sadvakasova.
The environment is high on the British Council agenda and our office in Almaty has a `Green Team’ which has taken active measures to make our operations more environmentally friendly. As well as recycling materials and implementing a number of energy saving measures, the British Council is planning to combine team building with an environmental theme, to ensure all our staff are on board with the green agenda.
