On October 20, 2010 the round table on perspectives of English language teaching in secondary school was held in Astana. The event was organised by the British Council with the support of Pre-school and Secondary-School Education Department of RK Ministry of Education and Science and “Nazarbaev Intellectual Schools”.

During this event participants discussed teaching methods of English language in Kazakhstan, problems and perspectives in accordance to the State Educational Development Programme 2011-2020. Besides that the recommendations for enhancing teaching standards were developed.

The roundtable was organised in the framework of English language teaching consulting research held by the British Council with participation of international English language consultant Elena Lenskaya.

As part of this research Lenskaya will properly analyse educational materials, namely books and educational programs documentations, teaching methods in secondary-school educational system, teachers’ professional development, knowledge and skills assessment of teachers and students. Also the system of teachers’ preparation and improving their qualification will be taken into consideration in order to get the whole picture of inter-dependant English teaching components.

On the basis of the research results the recommendations for improvement of English language teaching system strategies will be provided. This is expected to contribute significantly to the implementation of the State Educational Development Programme.
