Procedure:
Pre-activity:
Play the record to students (Verse 1 and Chorus) without giving a specific task.
Activity:
1.Give students a list of the verbs to fill in the blanks. For the low intermediate level the verbs may be already in the past tense form. For higher levels it is recommended to give the base forms of the verbs to fill.
2.After students finish the gap-fill task, play the record once more for them to check. Give necessary explanations. Encourage guessing unknown vocabulary. Ask them for the meaning of the expression “stick up one’s nose”. E.g. They stuck up their nose. They refused to accept him, because they did not think he was good enough.
3.Play Verse 2 and Chorus. Ask the students to fill in the gaps with the correct forms of the phrasal verbs as they listen. For intermediate to advanced students use the infinitives. Ask the students to work out the meaning of the phrasal verbs.
4.Assign the students the matching exercise. The definitions are taken from Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (2002).
5.Give the students the lyrics of the song (download below). Play the last part of the record. Students may be asked to work out the meaning of the following expressions: to be worth, to be in love, to meet the eye, to rock one’s world, to miss out, used to know. Let them sing along.
Post-Activity
The list includes a choice of speaking activities to suit all levels and learning styles and a follow-up writing activity.
a)Discuss the attitudes of young people to each other depending on clothes they wear.
b)Tell the story of these two young people as one of them/one of their friends. Use the phrasal verbs from the song. Note: For the narrative students may use Present or Past Simple.
c)Roleplay the story (characters: girl, boy, girl’s friends, boy’s new girlfriend). Note: Structures to be used may include modals (“You should/shouldn’t”), conditionals (“If I were you…”; “If you do… you will…” etc.), phrasal verbs (tag along, live on sth.) or else.
d)In groups or individually think of a different end to the story. Tell the class what would happen if… Note: Students may also use Present, Past or Future Simple for the narrative.
e)Imagine that you are the girl. Tell the story using Past Conditional (If I hadn’t done… I would have done…) to express your regret.
f)Write a letter to your friend telling this story as if happened to someone you know.
