WHAT IS IELTS?

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.

If you want to study abroad in an English-speaking country and you need to meet English language entry requirements for university or visa processing, IELTS is the test for you. Universities and other institutions of further and higher education in the United States, United Kingdom and other European countries, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Canada use IELTS scores.

If you want to emigrate to an English-speaking country, then IELTS is also the test for you.

IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP:IELTS Australia.

You can take the test with us, at our centre.

WHERE IS IT RECOGNISED?

IELTS is one of the most widely-recognised and used English language tests. Thousands of educational institutions, professional associations and government departments across 120 countries around the world recognise IELTS scores as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to communicate in English.

In the USA the IELTS test is now recognised by more than 1800 institutions and new ones are constantly added to the list - the lastest version can be found here.

IELTS is also required as proof of your language abilities for immigration to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

IELTS has been approved for use in the UK immigration system.

The IELTS website is regularly updated to reflect the increasing number of institutions and organisations that recognise IELTS.  The websites of recognising institutions/organisations should also be visited for any update on their IELTS requirements.

TYPES OF IELTS TEST

The test is available in two formats - Academic or General Training. If you are planning to study English at university level, you will need the Academic Test.
If you are planning to study at non-university level, want work experience, or want to emigrate to Australia, New Zealand or Canada, you will need to take the General Training Test

HOW LONG IS IT VALID FOR?

Once you have your IELTS score this will be valid for two years. IELTS results are available in two weeks, which can help if you need to know your level quickly (for applications).

HOW IS THE TEST  MARKED?

IELTS measures your ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking. You will receive a Band Score between one and nine (from non-user to expert user). The Band Score shows your overall result across the four components of the exam. There are no fixed pass marks in IELTS, because the institution requiring the test decides what band mark you need.

Have a look at the IELTS Handbook for a full description of the test format and mark scheme.

HOW TO PREPARE

You don't have to attend a course but it is a good idea to try a practice test to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. You can do this by borrowing course books and practice tests which are available at the Oton Zupančič Library in Ljubljana as of 1st September 2007. These are also available from the University Library in Maribor.
You can also purchase some course books in local bookshops. Copies of the practice test can also be bought directly from IELTS.

Also, have a look at the practice tips on the IELTS website and Cambridge ESOL IELTS Teaching Resources or try a free IELTS interactive practice test online.

We also offer three hour introductory workshops several times a year.

If you would like to attend a language course, the following is a list of schools which offer preparation courses.

Berlitz Gosposvetska 2, Ljubljana
Jezikovni center International Gornji trg 4, Ljubljana
Panteon College Vojkova 1, Ljubljana

Please note that schools included on this list does not imply recognition or recommendation by the British Council.
