RESEARCH NETWORKS - Building links in Europe

Research Networks connects young researchers Europe-wide and helps to launch them on an international career in science.

The British Council co-funds and administers a series of research partnership programmes linking UK-based scientists with their opposite numbers in key countries across Europe. At any one time several hundred teams drawn from the whole spectrum of scientific disciplines are in receipt of grants; this support is focused primarily on early career researchers. These partnership programmes have been brought together under the Research Networks umbrella; some joint activities, such as training workshops for young researchers, are organised. But each partnership programme is operated independently in conjunction with the co-funding organisation in the partner country.

What is funding for?
Funding is provided in the form of grants towards travel and subsistence costs for exchange visits between the collaborating teams, The British Council funds the costs related to the UK -based researchers.

How Should I Apply?
Most programmes operate on the basis of an annual call for proposals. The dates of the call vary from programme to programme, so you should use the links below to check on the specific arrangements for the programme of interest to you.

Which Countries Have Partnerships Programmes With The British Council?

France
The Alliance Programme promotes Franco-British research co-operation in all disciplines, including the social sciences and humanities. Funding is provided over two years for the mobility costs of joint projects led by early career researchers. A call for proposals is issued each year, with a deadline normally in May.

Germany
ARC (Academic Research Programme) is designed to increase collaboration and mobility, particularly among young researchers, in the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany. ARC supports visits which are part of an agreed collaborative project between research groups in the UK and Germany. Grants are offered as contributions towards travel and living costs only.

Italy
The British-Italian programme provides funding primarily for collaborative visits between research groups in the two countries. Project coordinators and members of research groups must be in early stages of their careers. The subject areas of the programme change yearly with the publication of the calls for proposals each spring.

Netherlands
The Partnership Programme in Science is for early-stage and talented post-doctorate researchers working in higher education. Through our partnerships programme you'll be able to exchange ideas and engage in new scientific and academic research collaborations more easily. The scheme covers both workshop/seminar proposals and individual research visits.

Poland
The Polish-British Young Scientists Programme (YSP) provides young scientists from Poland and the United Kingdom with enhanced study and research opportunities. The programme enables participants to make one or more research visits to a partner institution(s) in the UK (for Polish participants) or to Polish institution(s) (for UK participants)

Portugal
The Treaty of Windsor Programme funds exchange visits between researchers from UK research institutions and from Portuguese universities and polytechnics belonging to Portuguese Council of Rectors and the Coordinating Council for Portuguese Polytechnics. Applications from younger scientists d from senior research teams that include young researchers are particularly welcome.
