Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) exams are the world’s leading range of certificates for learners of English. Each year, they are taken by around 2 million people, in 130 countries and are recognised by thousands of educational organisations and employers throughout the world.
Cambridge ESOL is part of the world-famous University of Cambridge. Its English language exams are linked to the Common European Framework for Modern Languages, published by the Council of Europe. They are the only certificated exams referred to in the Framework document as specifically linked to it by a long-term research programme.
They are English language exams for people whose first language is not English. They test how you use English to communicate on a day-to-day basis and in real-life situations. Each exam covers the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Above all, the exams assess ability to communicate effectively in English.
Encourage your children to take one of the three available tests for young learners: Starters, Movers and Flyers. The tests aim to encourage meaningful language use, and measure ability accurately and fairly.
These tests are designed to assess the English of primary learners between the ages of seven and twelve. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. They aim to test relevant and meaningful language use, and promote and encourage effective learning and teaching.
The highest level test, Flyers, is roughly equivalent in language level to the Key English Test (KET). It can serve as an appropriate bridge to the KET or a step towards Preliminary English Test (PET), as learners move into adolescence. There is no pass or fail. Every candidate who attempts all three components will receive an award showing a number of shields (Cambridge crests) out of five for each component.
You can take general Cambridge English exams with us at one of five levels; each level will test your English skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. We can also help you apply and prepare for the exam. The levels are:
Key English Test (KET) tests your ability to deal with basic communication needs in everyday situations and is equivalent to a good elementary level. |
Preliminary English Test (PET) demonstrates that you have enough English to cope with social and work situations and is equivalent to intermediate level. |
First Certificate in English (FCE) is for people with a high intermediate level and tests your ability in all the language skills. It is widely recognised in commerce and industry, and by educational institutions in the UK and overseas as proof of language ability. |

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is an advanced level exam and is suitable for people who require English for professional or study purposes. The exam focuses on the use of English language skills to achieve real-world tasks. It is also recognised by the majority of UK universities as fulfilling English Language entrance requirements. |

Certificate in Proficiency in English (CPE) is at upper advanced level. It is recognised by UK universities for admission purposes and for business and academic purposes around the world. |
