Developing Young Leaders through sport

Dreams + Teams (D+T) is an international programme that aims to develop leadership and cross-cultural awareness in young people through sport and international educational links. There are currently 45 countries active in the project.

The project has two main strands: a leadership through sport training programme for 14—19 year olds and the development of school links with schools in the UK.

In Latvia the project started in 2006 and is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Participants

Currently 7 schools are successfully involved in the programme:

Aluksne State Gymnasium
Dobele State Gymnasium
Pumpuri Secondary school
Strenči Secondary School
Vaiņode Secondary School
Riga Teika Secondary School
Rugaji Secondary School

Activities

All schools have had festivals which were organised by Young Leaders for smaller kids from their own and neighbouring schools. They have also established school links with British schools and have been on exchange visits.

Up to now we have trained three D+T Teacher Trainers, 15 D+T Teachers, 260 Young Leaders and approximately 2000 children have taken part in the festivals organised by Young Leaders. One of the highlight events this summer was Young Leaders’ camp which took place in Strenci Secondary school where young leaders from Aluksne, Dobele, Rugaji and Strenci schools extended their leadership knowledge, acquired publicity and fund-raising skills, learned how to set up D+T club and did charity work.

D+T Young Leaders are actively participating in the Project by setting up D+T clubs in their schools and organising a number of events. The most recent are the following:

10 Young Leaders and two teachers from Rugaji Secondary school visited their partner school in England (Worden High school), 22–26 September
Arts and Sports Festival dedicated to Latvia’s 90th anniversary ‘Svinam kopā!’ in Liepna Boarding school, 6 November, 137 children took part (organised by Young Leaders from Aluksne State Gymnasium)
Quizz in Teika Secondary school, 13 November
10 Young Leaders and 2 teachers from Strenci Secondary school will visit their partner school in England (Norden High school), 24–28 November.

Four new groups of Young Leaders have been trained in Dobele, Madona, Daugavpils and Bauska. Welcome to the team!

Since August we have been running INSETT courses in cooperation with State Youth Initiative Centre (VJIC) financed by MoES. By now we have trained 100 teachers across Latvia and 60 Young Leaders in Balvi and Riga. We are planning to train 80 Young Leaders in Ludza, Limbazi, Saldus and Daugavpils during November and December.
