Our services

We provide information about the British Council and its programs and activities. If we are unable to provide you with information directly then we can guide you to the correct enquiry point. We also provide several other specific services including the List of Travellers scheme.

Our staff are trained in the use of plain English and we aim to make the information we provide as clear as possible. We are also able to provide information in special formats, such as Braille, if this is needed.

We do not charge you to use the information centre's services. The only costs you will incur will be the cost of your chosen communication method. Please note that some of the programs and services we give information on may have a cost involved.

The British Council Information Centre costs £271,000 to run per year. This includes a £21,000 operational budget and £250,000 staffing costs. The staffing costs cover the Information Centre Manager, 3 Enquiries Officers and 7 Enquiries Assistants. You can find out about how the British Council is funded here

Information Provision
The British Council generates and enhances mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries. It administers a wide range of programmes and services in arts, education, science and society.

If you need information about any of this but are having difficulty finding it we can help you.

We will either provide you with the information or refer you to the most appropriate department. The most common requests for information we receive are around:

Education in the UK for International Students
Funding for International Students
Learning and teaching English
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Socrates

Contacts
If you need to contact us but do not know who you need to speak to then we can put you in contact with the right person or team.

List of Travellers
The List of Travellers is a scheme which enables non-EU pupils in UK schools to travel to other EU member states on educational school trips without the need for a visa. We administer this scheme on behalf of the Home Office. You can find out more about the scheme, who can use it and how to apply on our List of Travellers page.

Network UK
Network UK is a mobility portal for researchers at post-doctoral level coming to the UK. It provides useful information covering academic, funding, welfare issues connected to living, and studying in the UK.

We are the national helpline for this programme, and we form one of the ERA-MORE network of EU Mobility centres.

You can find more information on the Network UK site.
