School accreditation process

The British school examinations in Jordan are governed by two tripartite agreements between the Ministry of Education of Jordan, the British Council and the two examining boards the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel.  All schools in Jordan offering the British school programmes have to be approved by the four parties.

Under this protocol we offer the following programmes:

•Cambridge Primary (CP) – CP Checkpoint

•Cambridge Secondary (CS) – CS Checkpoint

•International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

•Advanced Level

These programmes are offered by both CIE and Edexcel boards and schools have the right to choose which board they want to implement at their schools.

If you are a school operating in Jordan and you are interested in offering any of the above programmes please follow the following steps:

1.Visit the British Council to know more about the nature and structure of the programme and how it can help you to improve education in your school.

2.Read the protocol agreement to understand the roles of all parties and to be aware of the requirement and specifications needed in your school for running the programme.

3.Send a letter to the Ministry of Education/Director of Foreign Programmes requesting to start the programme in your school.

4.The British Council will receive a letter from the Ministry of Education asking to start the process of inspection by the board.

5.Once the school is ready, the British Council will arrange with the board for an official inspection for the school.  It might take up to four months to arrange a visit depending on the inspector’s schedule. We will inform you well in advance of the date of the inspection visit.

6.The inspection visit will be conducted by the British Council, Ministry of Education and the Examining Board. It will last 1-2 days depending on the size of the school. The inspection will cover the following areas:

  • necessary and relevant government permission and authorisation to operate as an educational organisation to         offer international education and qualification
  • description of the school premises, general facilities and location
  • description of the present curriculum offered by the school
  • number of classrooms being used for the programme and class size
  • description of classrooms in terms of capacity, furniture condition, lighting and ventilation quality
  • description of science laboratories in terms of capacity, furniture condition, equipment, safety precautions, lighting and ventilation quality
  • description of library in terms of capacity, furniture condition, books quantity and quality, other materials, opening hours and library rules.
  • learning resources available for students (e.g. textbooks, part papers...etc.)
  • ICT facilities including hardware, software and internet access to different age groups with arrangements for internet safety.
  • number of computers available to students
  • list of subject you are going to teach at each level.
  • number of pupils that attend the school and breakdown of the age ranges within the school
  • ratio of students to teachers within each age range.
  • number of teachers teaching the programme and their qualifications recognition
  • a system in place for teachers training and development
  • secure storage and process for assessment materials (receiving question papers (QP), key holding, scripts delivery…etc.)

7.You will receive the inspector‘s report 3-4 weeks after the visit.

8.It is common that the school is not recommended from the first time. If the school was not recommended the inspector will give an action plan to the school for improvement and we will have to reschedule another inspection visit.

9.Once the school is in compliance another visit will be arranged either by the Board, the British Council or both of them.  At least three weeks later the school will receive the official approval from the board.

10.The school then has to send a copy of the inspection report and the approval letter to the Ministry of Education
