International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an internationally recognised system for testing English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Why do an IELTS exam?

If you are thinking of working, studying or emigrating to an English speaking country, then an IELTS qualification may be essential.

There are two exam modules:

Academic – for candidates applying for undergraduate or postgraduate university courses, or applying to the Medical Council.
General – for candidates wanting to take vocational courses in an English speaking country, or for immigration purposes.

IELTS at the British Council

Courses to develop the skills and techniques you need to succeed in the exam.

We offer two IELTS courses: one for candidates who need to take the General Exam and another for candidates who need to take the Academic Exam.

Please note that we do not offer classes for people who cannot read or write in English

Key features

Focus on writing, listening, reading and speaking skills needed for the exam
Developing skills in understanding the requirements of question types in all four papers, and responding appropriately
Providing advice on organising, structuring and editing writing
Fostering creative thinking and analytical thinking skills
Trial tests with feedback are given to aid exam preparation. Band scores are not given but useful exam tips and advice are provided

It is expected that students enrolling in the IELTS courses already have sufficient English language skills to enable them to cope with the content of the course.
