The British Council's Drama & Dance team promotes the best of the UK’s performing arts sector through a range of activities and events including tours of new productions, workshops and residencies, seminars and conferences, showcases and UK study visits for overseas practitioners. Our programme reflects the innovative and diverse nature of the UK’s performing arts sector encompassing classical theatre, modern ballet, new writing, physical and visual theatre, contemporary dance, live art and outdoor performance.

Recent activities

The Vanishing Horizon (March 2012)

In collaboration with Aat Festival for International Women’s Day, the British Council presented The Vanishing Horizons performance by Idle Motion Company from the UK on 06 and 07 March in Al Balad Theatre. The performance has been selected as part of the British Council Showcase at 2011 Edinburgh Festival. Moreover, Idle Motion offered two free workshops on ‘Ways into Devising’ to the local Jordanian drama students on 06 and 07 March 2012 in Al Balad Theatre and in collaboration with Aat Festival.

The Animals and Children Took To The Streets (April 2013)

In collaboration with Al-Balad Theatre and Al-Hussein Culture Centre, the British Council organised 2 evening performances on 1st and 2nd April 2013, and a matinee performance on 3rd April exclusively for schools, as part of our ambition to expose the younger generation to our Arts work.

The Talent “BalletBoyz” (April 2012)

In April 2012 The British Council and the fourth annual Amman Contemporary Dance Festival presented a BalletBoyz performance by The Talent Company from the UK to a Jordanian audience, and dance workshop was organised by the National Centre for Culture and Arts (NCCA) for 12 young dancers. The NCCA has the concrete mission of enhancing the theatre and dance movement in Jordan, and has been working tirelessly towards allowing Jordanian audiences to experience a diversity of cultures and making culture accessible to all.

Candoco Dance Company (April 2013)

The British Council, in collaboration with the fifth annual Amman Contemporary Dance Festival presented Candoco Dance Company’s show “Set and Reset/Reset” and “Looking Back” to a Jordanian audience on 24thApril 2013 at Al-Hussein Cultural Centre.

Wired Aerial Theatre “Stuffed” (April 2013)

The British Council and Zakharef in Motion Dance Festival presented Stuffed by Wired Aerial Theatre Company from the UK on Wednesday 08 May 2013 in Al-Hussein Cultural Centre, followed by a performance by local dancers who has presented the outcome of the residency and 4 taster workshops of Wired Aerial Theatre Company in Jordan as part of Zakharef Lab, in the period 29 April - 08 May 2013.

Forward Motion Screening (May 2012)

In collaboration with Zakharef in Motion Dance Festival, the British Council screened Forward Motion Screen Dance films in May 2012 at Al-Hussein Cultural Centre.
