May Gussous
The National Orthodox School

I owe a great deal of my career development to the British Council in Jordan. Not only had the British Council helped me personally, but it also helped my English Language teachers at the school, the National Orthodox School, by catering for our specific needs and organising a number of practical and useful methodology workshops through their excellent and efficient staff at the language centre.

Being an English teacher / coordinator, I have always dreamt of organising an annual conference for the English language teachers where they can meet, share ideas and keep up to date with new trends and techniques in teaching. Therefore, and with the help and substantial support from the teaching centre at the British Council in Jordan, I was able to realise my dream in 1995. This English language symposium which started as a small affair for a limited group of schools in Jordan became an important annual affair and for the eighth year in succession and encompassed a good number of English language teachers as participants and as presenters. Not only has the British Council provided the annual symposia with excellent workshops by their teaching staff, but also through the ample help of the British Council, it has become an international event. It has invited a number of skilful specialists in their fields from the U.K. to join as keynote speakers and a number of publishers present their latest publications on the theme of the symposium.

Furthermore, I was really lucky to be chosen as one of the two people to represent the English teachers in Jordan, to the ELTECs conference in Morocco in April 2001 where I met the elitist of the elite in the English language profession. I actually came back with a deeper insight and clearer vision on many of the important issues on teaching English. This facilitated the founding of the Jordanian branch of ELTeCs later on at the British Council. Almost all English language teachers in Jordan, and who have access to the Internet, are electronically connected. They share ideas, lesson plans, new methods, keeping abreast of upcoming Language events all over the world, and conferences….Etc.

I was also sent by the British Council to Oxford University to attend a conference on teaching literature “Fresh Air in the Classroom“ in April 2002. Attending this conference is real life enriching experience which has significantly influenced the quality of my literature teaching.

Moreover, the moment I step in the British Council, I sense an atmosphere that is warm, friendly created by their capable and cooperative staff in all departments. One actually lives their logo which is 'Creating equal opportunities for all' rather than read it.

Thank you very much and God Bless you
