About this course
This course offers you the opportunity to develop your vocabulary and language skills using up to date materials from a variety of media sources including websites, television, radio and newspapers.
All materials on the course deal with issues that are current and you will have an opportunity to discuss and agree with the teacher the topics, language areas and skills that you are interested in working on.
Course outline
In the Current Affairs course you will select from the following topics:
- Politics
- Major events
- Domestic Social Issues
- International Social Issues
- People in the news
- Culture
- Environmental Issues
- Development Issues
- Economic Issues
- Sport
In the Current Affairs course you will have the opportunity to:
- learn high frequency collocations and expressions on a range of topics
- practise giving opinions, interrupting, agreeing, disagreeing
- develop your ability to summarise and paraphrase in speaking
- develop your ability to summarise and paraphrase in writing
- develop reading speed and reading skills
- develop your ability to recognise bias and attitude in reporting
- develop your ability to listen to a variety of accents on a range of topics
- write discursive essays and reports
- speak at length in a relaxed informal setting
- give mini presentations on a topic of your choice
