About this courses

On this course you will

  • learn the processes of writing three different kinds of essays: descriptive, chronological and comparison and contrast
  • practise pre-writing tasks such as planning and writing an outline for essays.
  • learn how to structure essays and link ideas together effectively.


Course Outline

The following points will be covered on the course:

  • Using techniques to generate ideas such as brainstorming and using mind- maps
  • Writing an outline of an essay
  • Developing and improving paragraph and essay structure
  • Writing effective introductions and conclusions
  • Writing appropriate thesis statements
  • Common grammatical and vocabulary errors in essays
  • Evaluating essays, offering and receiving feedback as a class
  • Using dictionaries/reference books effectively
  • Using effective discourse markers to link ideas

Students will write three essays over the course, much of which will be done as homework.
