Students cannot join Academic Writing 2 without having completed Academic Writing 1.


About this courses

On this course you will

  • learn the processes of writing cause and effect and discursive essays.
  • do further work on descriptive essays on one’s own academic subject of interest.
  • do further work on pre-writing tasks.
  • practise how to use reference materials and summarise, paraphrase and quote.
  • learn how to write a bibliography and make quotations.


Course Outline

According to students needs, the following points will be covered on the course:

  • Organising ideas and generating ideas through brainstorming and outlining
  • Developing clear outlines, introductions and thesis statements
  • Organising a cause and effect essay
  • Evaluating the structure and language of learners’ essays
  • Organising a discursive essay
  • Using quotations in an essay
  • Writing different types of bibliographies
  • Paraphrasing and summarising and avoiding plagiarism

Students will write five essays over the course, much of which will be done as homework. One of the essays will be timed-writing in class.
