Student experiences

We asked a number of current international students and recently returned alumni for some insight into their experiences while studying in the UK. Here are some responses from independent school students:

'Boarding school was a completely new experience for me, because we don't have them in Russia. Living in close proximity to British and international pupils has made me more tolerant and knowledgeable about people. I think this is very important in today's world. We're all very proud of our boarding houses, which makes the drama and music competitions we hold great fun. At Christmas we have parties and discos as well - a good chance to dress up and let your hair down.

'I've improved my English and I've become stronger, but my greatest achievement has been learning how to cope in different situations, without my family by my side and without them to help me make decisions. I've become very confident. Boarding school will provide you with some great academic and personal opportunities!'

'I came to England as I saw this as the best way of getting into higher education in the UK and to experience a different way of teaching. The UK system is very different to that in China but I can learn from both of them.

'I'm studying A-level mathematics, further mathematics, economics and physics, plus AS-level psychology and business studies. I'm also studying to improve my IELTS test score. It's important to get everything well organised and to work according to the time-schedule. The best thing about my course has been the small teaching groups - there are about seven students in each group, so each one can get more attention from the tutor. We can ask questions at any time during the lesson.
