Student experiences

We asked a number of current international students and recently returned alumni for some insight into their experiences while studying in the UK. Here’s some responses from students on postgraduate and MBA courses:

Lei Han, China (Diploma in Language Skills for International Postgraduates)

'I heard about the master's preparation course when I realise I didn't have a high enough mark in IELTS to enrol on the course I wanted to study. I found this course online and everything I've learned has been very useful. It's taught me what master's courses in the UK are like and I've become used to the way I'll study in a UK university. I learned many more skills than just the English language, such as how to give presentations and how to write long essays. The tutors are so supportive and helpful - they encourage me all the time, which helps to build up my confidence and this will be invaluable to my future studies.'

Pei Yi Lu, Taiwan (PhD History and Theory of Art)

'The education system in the UK is very independent, and I really appreciate this. This is very different from my previous education and lets me explore my interests. I can focus on my research topic, broaden my views and develop my own research methods. During my first year, I've tried to do research and read more material. I've visited a lot of exhibitions and have written reports on them for art magazines in Taiwan. All of these exhibitions have provided rich resources for my research. My PhD programme in the UK will support me professionally and give me an opportunity to develop.'

Salem Al-Halbadi, Qatar (MBA Engineering Management)

'I decided to do the MBA course as I hope to diversify my talents and aim towards a managerial position in my future career. My MBA course will teach me important managerial skills and encourage me to have different reactions and attitudes. I've found the course very interesting and I've already started to think very differently from when I arrived here. I used to look at decisions as black or white but now I've started to see the shades of grey. My MBA course has really improved my confidence in making decisions and has also helped me to see myself in a position where I can play a bigger role. I'd advise any international student to grasp the opportunity to do their master's course in the UK - especially an MBA. It's a really good investment for future career opportunities and a great way to learn how Europeans manage their professional lives.'

'I was in contact with my current supervisor from the University of Bristol throughout my application process. He gave me advice on how to obtain a postgraduate scholarship and he even picked me up from the airport when I first arrived here.

'I've been carrying out research on oral cancer and pre-cancer, using molecular techniques I've learned from my supervisor, who is always on hand if I need any additional advice or support. I've had access to a wide range of research publications and my research group is very friendly and helpful. The working atmosphere here is excellent. I hope to continue research into oral cancer and complete professional exams to become an oral pathologist in due course.'

Reshma Sharma, Trinidad and Tobago (Commercial Law)

'My postgraduate studies have required independent work and have made me focus on critical analysis and thought. I've welcomed the opportunity for greater participation and autonomy. For example, I've given oral presentations on specific topics and led the ensuing discussions, involving the rest of the group, for my seminars in Oil and Gas Law. The course director has presented us with a wealth of information and resources on the subject matter and this enabled me to develop public speaking skills. When my course finishes, I intend to go home and hope to resume my duties as a Senior State Counsel at the Solicitor General's Department, Ministry of the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time in the UK and I know that I will take with me invaluable legal knowledge, lasting friendships and memories of an unforgettable time and place.'
