Eighteen UK and sixteen Japanese Universities took part in the recent Japan UK Symposium in London, testimony to the interest in deepening relations between universities in the UK and Japan. The event was organised by the British Council in partnership with , Japan's main research funding body, and badged as one of the events in the UK commemorate 150 years since Japan started diplomatic relations with the UK.
The two key note speakers, Prof. David Eastwood, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council of the UK and Dr. Tsutomu Kimura, gave concise overviews of recent development in higher education in each country.
The following three themes were discussed in the parallel sessions;
- the contribution of HE to regional development
- an appropriate curriculum for the workplace in the 21st century
- the internationalisation of research
