Chevening Scholarships are prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom.
The scholarships are named after Chevening House in Kent, the official country residence of the Foreign Secretary. They are available in more than 130 countries and around 1000 new Chevening Scholarships are awarded globally each year, of which four awards are for Japan. We have sent over 180 Japanese scholars to the UK under this scheme since 1984.
Chevening scholarships offer an ideal opportunity for young, high-flying graduates not only to study their chosen subject, but also to meet and network with their peers in the unique learning atmosphere that the UK provides. The ultimate objective is to build a network of friends of the UK, who will be future leaders in their countries.
Scholars are chosen on the basis that they will become opinion formers and decision-makers as well as influential friends of the UK. Successful candidates have the ‘Chevening’ qualities of ambition drive, leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisation development, talent for innovation and creativity, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances not only in technical and professional terms but also culturally.
The programme is highly competitive. Applicants are assessed according to the merit of their applications, their qualifications (both academic and professional) and their English language ability.
Successful candidates are selected by the British Embassy. The scheme is administrated by the British Council, on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). We plan to select four scholars for the academic year of 2010/2011.
The FCO offers successful candidates scholarships covering tuition fees of up to £10,000, flights to and from the UK and living expenses sufficient for a single student.
Applications should be made online during the recruitment period. Only the short-listed candidates will be contacted after mid December 2009 and invited for an interview in mid February 2010.
