The British Council was established in the UK in 1934 and has been in Japan since 1953. Please find below some highlights of our history.

1934  The British government establishes the British Council
 
1940  Incorporated by Royal Charter
 
1953  Opening of Tokyo centre
 
1960  Cultural Agreement between Japan and the UK is signed, designating the British Council as the UK's official agency for cultural relations in Japan
 
1986  Tokyo centre relocates to Shinjuku-ku, with His Royal Highness Prince Charles in attendance at the opening ceremony
 
1994  Opening of Osaka centre
 
1998  UK 98
 
2008  UK-Japan 2008
 
2009  75th Anniversary of  the British Council
 
2012  London 2012 Summer Olympic Games
