At the masters level UK universities award two basic types of degrees:

The time spent on the Masters degree usually counts towards the registration for the PhD.
The New Route PhD offers an alternative to the traditional PhD. The New Route PhD is a national initiative to provide PhD students with the highest quality of taught materials and practical experience alongside advanced research. This integrated approach offers students a learning environment in which to broaden and deepen subject knowledge while providing the opportunity for interdisciplinary study to extend their expertise in new directions. The degree is currently offered in more than 115 subjects at 31 UK universities. The New Route PhD is normally completed in four years.
