BE PART OF CLIMATE GENERATION
British Council welcomes Climate Champions

Climate change is now recognised as the biggest challenge facing the world and its impact will affect us all. Mankind's role in contributing to climate change is now indisputable.

The British Council believes that young people are key to raising awareness and finding sustainable solutions to tackle climate change.

This is why Climate Generation has been developed, to support young climate activists (Climate Champions), passionate and committed, who lead by example and influence their communities.

What is Climate Generation?

A project aimed at young positive activists who are already involved in implementing projects that address issues which raise awareness of, adapt to, and mitigate climate change.

Through Climate Generation, taking place in 60 countries worldwide, we aim to generate awareness about climate change, reduce its impact and modify future generations’ habits.

Who can participate?

Climate activists aged 16 to 35 working in any discipline. This can include upper-secondary school students and teachers, University students or researchers, architects, engineers, journalists, business managers, NGO workers, government collaborators and others.  Candidates must portray a proactive interest in climate change, taking positive action at a local, national or international level.

The project in Latin America and the Caribbean offers this younger generation the opportunity to spread their climate change message at school, University, business and community levels across the region and internationally.

The selected winners will have the opportunity to:

Attend training on leadership, project management and negotiation skills.

Be given support to raise public awareness of their project locally and regionally.

Be part of the British Council International Climate Change network and have the opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas with other climate change activists.

Be able to apply for a grant to support their project (20 grants x £1,000).

Be given the opportunity to apply for a place to attend national and international events organised throughout the year, e.g. COP16 in Mexico as representatives of the Climate Generation project.

In 2010, the Climate Generation project will identify, in Latin America and the Caribbean, 100 young leaders with proactive interest in climate change.

To be considered for selection, candidates must be:

Between 16 and 35 years old

Committed and enthusiastic about tackling climate change

Able to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of climate change, as well as a significant track record of achievement in climate change community activism or volunteer work

Comfortable communicating in English (preferably)

Strong communicators

Able to demonstrate leadership

Actively involved in a local project tackling climate change issues with a relevant community impact. The selected champions will represent their project and team in the Climate Generation project

Willing to commit to the Climate Generation programme for one year and be willing to network beyond their participation in the project

Committed to sharing the skills acquired through Climate Generation within their communities

To participate, candidates need to apply online before July 19, 2010
