What we do

We are the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. The British Council is incorporated by Royal Charter. We are an executive non-departmental public body, a public corporation (in accounting terms) and a charity.

For more than 70 years the British Council has been building strong cultural relations with other countries, exchanging knowledge and ideas and providing educational opportunities. Our programmes have over 7,500 staff in 217 cities in 110 countries reaching over 112 million people a year in the UK.

Our Purpose is to build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries and to increase appreciation of the UK’s creative ideas and achievements”.

In Jamaica we aim to increase international recognition of the range and quality of learning opportunities from the UK. Through our knowledge and learning approach we have learning, information, events and professional development to offer you a service that provides UK expertise, whatever your educational needs.

We work closely with UK institutions and disseminate information on study in the UK through our information centre, education fair and visits to various institutions in the island.

We partner with local arts stakeholders and the Ministry of Education in their education development programme by study visits, BC Seminars, local workshops and technical expertise.

As the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations we develop relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds.  Engaging positively with the richness of this diversity is central to what we do and in line with our core values.
