Registering for the International English Language Testing System test with us is easy.

You can take the IELTS tests at five of our venues - Tokyo , Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka and you should be aged sixteen or above.

Test fee 24,675JPY (valid to December 2009 IELTS session)
Closing date for applications is five weeks before the test date. If a session is full, we may close registration early. If you apply by post, please give a second choice of date.
You will receive full confirmation of the test date, venue and the time of your speaking test two weeks before the test.

The application procedure for the IELTS will change effective with effect from 04 November 2008.
If you are applying for the test after 04 November 2008, please follow the procedure below to pay your test fee and submit the required documents.

STEP 1   Send your application form and the required documents to the British Council

Notice for Candidates in Japan' before you register. It will be considered that you have agreed to the most recent version when you register for IELTS.

  1. Application form (pdf 495KB)
  2. A copy of the passport(* Note 1) you used for registration (please write your test date and venue on the copy)
  3. Two passport-sized photos (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm).Please write your name and the test date on the back
  4. Two A4 self-addressed envelopes(** Note 2)

Send the required documents and application form to the appropriate address below by the closing date, which is five weeks before the test date (If a session is full at the time of receipt, you may be directed to a test date of your second choice).

  • For tests in Tokyo and Nagoya;
    British Council (IELTS)1-2 Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 162-0825
  • For tests in Osaka, Kyoto and Fukuoka;
    British Council (IELTS) Dojima Avanza 4F, 1-6-20 Dojima, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-0003

* Note 1 Identification

  • In Japan your passport is the only identification document approved for IELTS.
  • Any other forms of identification, including alien registration cards, Juki Net cards, student IDs, and insurance card, are not valid.  You cannot take the IELTS test without your passport.
  • On the test date, please make sure to bring the same passport that you used at the time of your application.  If you bring a different one, a copy, or expired identification, you will be refused admission to the test venue.
  • If you are applying for a visa, please check the dates carefully to ensure you will receive your passport back in time for your test.

** Note 2 Envelope

  • Candidates are required to send the self-addressed envelopes. In order to ensure that you receive your invitation letter and results, please write your address and name yourself.  No stamp is necessary.

STEP 2   Receive the bank transfer information and a Transaction Reference for your payment, which are necessary to pay your test fee, from the British Council by e-mail or postcard
You will receive the bank transfer information and your Transaction Reference* for your payment from the British Council. The return e-mail or post card will be sent out from the British Council within 7 days from receipt of your application form.

*Transaction Reference

  • This is to identify which candidate has made a payment for which test date. When making your payment, please enter this Transaction Reference with your name.
  • This Transaction Reference is used only for payment.  It is not a candidate number.

STEP 3   Make payment at the bank
Pay your test fee by bank transfer by the payment due date provided by the British Council.
When making payment, please enter your name and the 6 digit Transaction Reference.(Example: Hanako Eikoku 521966)

  • Candidates need to obtain a Transaction Reference every time they register for the tests.  The numbers given are valid one time only.
  • If you use Internet banking and cannot enter the Transaction Reference number, please let us know the payment date, test date and full name by email.
    For tests in Tokyo and Nagoya: idexams@britishcouncil.or.jp
    For tests in Osaka, Kyoto and Fukuoka: idexams.osaka@britishcouncil.or.jp

Note:
Where payment has been made but registration procedures have not been followed correctly, we will not be able to process your application and will refund your payment minus an administration fee of 6,300JPY (including tax). This will apply to payments made to us after the due date for postal applications, or where the registration process was not completed correctly

Step 4   Send a bank transfer receipt to the British Council
For confirmation, send a copy of your bank transfer receipt, which you receive from the bank when you have made payment, to the British Council office where you registered for the test.

  • For tests in Tokyo and Nagoya;

Step 5   Receive an invitation letter from the British Council
Your invitation letter will be sent to you two weeks before the test date.

Attention;

  • You will not receive a receipt or confirmation for the registration and payment before your invitation letter is mailed.
  • If your test date is your second choice, you will be informed by the British Council at least three weeks before the test date.
  • We cannot deal with enquiries regarding receipt and payment status of individual applications.  If you need to confirm the receipt of documents, please use special mail services such as delivery-recorded mail.
  • Please keep the original bank transfer receipt and send a copy to the British Council so that you can later check if you correctly entered your Transaction Reference.  You can also use it as a proof of payment.
