Dr Danielle Schreve, Lecturer, Department of Geography, Royal Holloway University of London
Dr Danielle Schreve has been awarded a British-Italian Partnership Programme grant for her collaborative project with Dr Raffaele Sardella, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Rome "La Sapienza".
My collaboration with Raffaele Sardella arose through our comparable research into mammal faunas of the Pleistocene (last 2 million years) and particularly through our independent studies on long river sequences (the Thames and the Tiber respectively).  Between them, the fossil evidence from these river systems offers one of the most important archives for understanding how animals evolved, changed their distributions in the face of climate change and how some eventually became extinct.  As well as providing unparalleled detailed insight into how climates and environments have fluctuated over time, the research provides a context for understanding patterns of human evolution and dispersal and a possible means of predicting biological responses to future climate change.  The British Council grant will provide us with essential support to compare patterns between northern and southern Europe and to link key sites of similar age by carrying out detailed studies of the fossil assemblages in the UK and Italy, thereby allowing us to track past mammalian migrations and evolutionary trends on a continental scale.
