... Even the World Health Organisation has included electromagnetic pollution as being one of the problems of the modern world and has undertaken specific studies to establish how to guarantee people’s safety in terms of level of exposure. The minimum levels, below which no damaging effects are produced, are currently laid down in a series of international safety regulations. Individual countries refer to these rules in order to set the limits for exposure, sometimes erring on the side of caution to avoid any risk to their citizens. Despite the rigorous application of the precautionary principle, recent epidemiological studies have led to conjecture about the existence of biological effects from prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields. Results from these studies, however, have not yet reached conclusions which could confirm the existence of a causal link between the increase of certain illnesses and exposure to electromagnetic fields. Research however, continues, and contrasting opinions and views have created apprehension and anxiety. People are pushing for more stringent measures which often clash with the logical use and spread of technologies which we need for economic and social growth. |
