INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CHAMPIONS

Climate change is a challenge which affects all of us, but it is our young people who will inherit the impacts for many decades to come.  The British Council has a long history of commitment towards young people and the environment; I am very pleased that with the International Climate Champions project the Champions involved will be passing on a positive message be it in their schools, homes, communities or amidst their peers.”  Martin Davidson, Chief Executive, British Council

International Climate Champions is part of the British Council’s Climate Change programme of activities engaging young people, local partners and influencers around the world to build understanding of and action on climate change.
Italy’s first International Climate Champions were three students from Sardinia, Virginia Ledda, Elsa Pisanu and Irene Sanna, who were selected in May 2008 to represent Italy at the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting held in Kobe, Japan.  If you would like to know more about the girls and their extraordinary experience take a look at the links on the left.

INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CHAMPIONS COMPETITION 2009

This year the British Council Italy, together with Palmina La Rosa, Director AISLi Catania, has collaborated with Sicily’s Regional Department for Education and its Regional Agency for the Protection of Environment, and once again with our partners in Sardinia: the Sardinian Regional Education Authority, the Forestry Commission for Sardinia and the Anglo-Italian Cultural Association.  Seven new Champions have been selected.

Andrea Grondona from Sardinia and Lorenzo Di Palma from Sicily have been chosen as Italy’s International Climate Champions for 2009 and represented their country at the February workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland.  During this period, together with Champions from all over the world, they had the opportunity of discussing their projects with like-minded people, improved their communications skills, participated in field trips to various projects in the local area and visited the Scottish Parliament.

All 7 Champions, as local voices, have been awarded Euro 1000 to spend their “time in office” developing networks and a calendar of initiatives to involve schools and communities.
