On 5 December 2009 Andrea Grondona, together with 19 fortunate Climate Champions, boarded the train Climate Express and travelled from Brussels to Copenhagen to join 200 fellow Climate Champions from more than 40 countries worldwide who were attending the widely anticipated international summit – COP15 – as part of the British Council’s International Climate Champions programme.
During the journey to Copenhagen Andrea met Achim Steiner, Undersecretary of the United Nationas and Head of ONU’s Environmental Programme; Stefano Leoni, President WWF Italy and Barbara Morgante, Director central policy and planning of Italy’s state railway.
Andrea spent 5 days in Copenhagen taking part in the many manifestations organised at heart of the Conference, the Bella Center. Among the many people that he met were Ivo de Boer, Head Negotiator for the United Nations at COP15, Sabrina Di Nicola, Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kumi Naidoo, General Secretary of Greenpeace. He also also helped write, together with 4 other members, the opening speech for YOUNGO, the United Nations International Climate Youth Movement and took part in several of the plenary sessions.
Andrea is currently collaborating with La Maddalena national park authorities on a project examining the effect of climate change on the sea’s fauna and flora.
