Cambridge ESOL - Special arrangements
Helping candidates with special needs

ambridge ESOL is committed to helping candidates with special needs have the same opportunities as other candidates when taking English language exams.

Special arrangements for candidates with, for example:

  • Visual difficulties
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Speaking difficulties
  • Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia
  • Permanent writing difficulties (e.g. due to cerebral palsy)
  • A medical condition such as diabetes

Examples of emergency special arrangements:

  • Temporary writing difficulty (e.g. a broken arm)
  • Temporary hearing difficulty

Examples of special arrangements:

  • Braille papers (contracted or uncontracted Braille)*
  • Lip-reading versions of listening papers*
  • Enlarged print papers: A3 format (usually typed in 15.5 point) or A4* format (usually typed in 18 point bold)
  • Extra time
  • The use of amanuensis (someone who writes your answers for you as you dictate them)

Cambridge ESOL and the British Council will try to make arrangements that help you perform to the best of your ability in your chosen exam.

What to do

  1. Let us know immediately: you must let us know so that we can send your application to Cambridge ESOL.
  2. Very important: you must talk to us as soon as possible. If your application is not received by the deadline, it will usually not be possible for you to have special arrangements.
  3. You need to supply medical evidence: in most cases we will ask you for medical evidence to support your application.
