Methodology

We offer English courses that will lead you, our students, to make progress in English, providing:

Varied classroom activities and practice integrating the 4 language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Regular feedback on your progress through assessed tasks on these 4 skills.
Assessed tasks will draw on skills already practised in class and serve to show both you and your teacher how well you are following the course content; any weak points you have will be identified and your confidence in English improved through out-of-class support, such as Learner Pathways.

Improvement of your oral fluency and confidence in English through pair and group work, with your teacher monitoring your performance.

Classroom tasks and out-of-class support - Learner Pathways - with a real-world relevance based on can-do statements from the CEFR, making your study relevant to employers and academic institutions.
Learner Pathways are documents available to you in the Learning Zone and MMC which offer you lots of practice on all areas of language learning, based on can-do statements to keep them real and to tie-in with what you do in class.

The Leaning Zone - We have a wide selection of DVDs, videos, books, magazines and educational software available for all students. Access is free of charge for you and the membership card allows you to make use of the Learning Zone until the end of academic year.

Grammar and vocabulary teaching with useful language acquisition techniques promoted not only in your class but also in out-of-class support, such as the Speaking Club and other student language workshops.
To give you more opportunity to learn and practise outside class, we run a regular programme of events, including speaking and pronunciation techniques, vocabulary study, grammar review workshops and much more. Information about these events will be available at reception.

Promotion of learning strategies to enable you to become an autonomous language learner - this helps put you in charge of your progress.

We believe that language learning is most effective when...

Learners interact and participate fully in class activities.

Learners practise language through stimulating, meaningful and challenging tasks.

Learners enjoy lessons and build confidence in a stress-free environment.

Listening, speaking, reading and writing are integrated with language, vocabulary and pronunciation to help learners develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively.

Lessons facilitate the development of learner independence and autonomy.

A variety of media (visual, audio, computer-based) is used to make lessons more motivating, more interesting and more effective.

The aim of all our courses is to help you use English in a wide range of “real world” situations more effectively.

FIVE GOOD STUDY HABITS

  • Attend as many lessons as you are able to.
  • Keep a well-organised record of what you are studying.
  • Keep a well-organised record of all the new vocabulary you learn and then find ways to activate it.
  • Complete all the homework tasks your teacher sets you.
  • Complete all the tasks in your workbook and seek help from your teacher if you get stuck.

What is "The Common European Framework"?

The Common European framework of Reference

All of our courses fit the Council of Europe’s guidelines on language learning. This is useful for you because these levels are meaningful to employers, schools and universities. They also tie in with internationally recognised exams such as the Cambridge ESOL suite.

The Council of Europe has introduced the European Language Portfolio to help learners of all European languages.  The British Council believes that this is a valuable resource.  Consequently, we have adopted the "can do" statements from the European portfolio to create learning objectives that focus on the real world language that you need to communicate effectively in today's world.
