METHODOLOGY STATEMENT

  • The importance of language. It is mainly through language that we make sense of the world around us and communicate our experience. Learners should be given opportunities to express their meaning in sustained interaction.
  • How we facilitate language practice. Collaborative learning through pair and group work enriches patterns of interaction and provides for a secure, sociable and unthreatening environment for experimentation and practice in the language.
  • The importance of learner autonomy. Learners need to develop learner autonomy so they can learn to access what they need, when they need it.
  • The student is a "person". Positive attitudes result, and motivation is increased, when learning is purposeful and meaningful and teaching takes account of the “Whole” person – of his/her needs, interests and contribution to the learning process.
  • Errors are useful. Error is part of the learning process and evidence of the learner’s state of knowledge. Error offers an insight into what the learner is capable of and ready for.
  • Grammar in context. Grammar teaching should be undertaken in context and according to learners’ needs, interests and the demands of the task.
  • Integrated approach. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are rarely distinct activities in real life. Classroom activities should reflect this integration.
  • The teacher is essential. Apart from the text, the teacher is the main source of accurate and up-to-date grammatical and sociolinguistic input. The teacher has a vital role in helping the learner to extend his/her knowledge of the language. Use of the mother tongue should be kept to a minimum. Opportunities for the teacher and the learner to interact one-to-one and in small groups should be maximised.
