RYAN GANDER

Among the first appointments of COMING SOON is the project by Ryan Gander, young London based artist (awarded for the Arts Council of England International Fellowship, shortlisted for the Becks Futures and winner, in June 2005, of the Baloise Art Statement Prize at Basel). He will open his show inside and outside the unique space of "Esprit Nouveau", building realised as an ephemeral pavilion for Paris Universal Expo in 1925 by French architect Le Corbusier and rebuild after more than 50 years in 1977 in the middle of Bologna Fair District.
Ryan Gander will interpret and transform this real/fictional architectural document of Modern times through the realisation of 10 specific new artworks, heart of which will be a sort of "time capsule" reflecting the specific history of the pavilion through a project echoing the gap of 50 years between the pavilion's conception and execution. Deeply focusing on a new and more narrative institutional critique, Gander's project has been conceived to start in occasion of the exhibition and to be fully executed 50 years after its conception... in 2056. This "travel in the future" will be contrasted by a "travel in the past", connecting the pavilion in Bologna, in a subtile and multi-layered way, to a 50 years old Le Corbusier's building in Paris through the installation of a milestone produced out of its fallen concrete, a special project that will recreate the original shadow of the old building and a big intervention inside the double diorama, where the artist will create a sort of a theatrical stage and a ghosty mise en scene.
