Paseillo, Los Picadores – new works for the Biennale – and Nopalitos – the latest work by De Frutos – are the three panels that constitute this singular triptych, a form, recalls the choreographer, that has “been used in religious art for centuries”.
Paseillo “is the first procession in the ritual of the corrida, the first stage of the ritual of Eros”; Los Picadores “is a blood approach to the Noces by Stravinsky, along that subtle line that lies between violence and Eros”; Nopalitos “is a series of tableaux of life after death, inspired by the celebration of the Day of the Dead, where lovers and rivals meet for eternity”. Presented at Sadler’s Wells just last year, the critic of the Guardian, Judith Mackrell, described it in the following words: “ Inside a pavilion decorated with a lovers’ portrait and a pair of capering skeletons, De Frutos unveils a hallucinatory magic lantern show of Mexican culture. His extraordinary cast of characters ranges from camp wrestlers to a pair of girlish maidens in gas masks, from swaying funeral processions to brimming fiesta parties. The dancers bodies are alive with clashing, dance references, their gestures signal a world of mysterious ritual, and the plangent accompaniment of singer Lila Downs turns this piece into a fantasy beautifully weird and unpredictably wild".
The volcanic creativity of De Frutos is accompanied by the supple British company, the Phoenix Dance Theatre: founded in 1981 by David Hamilton, Donald Edwards and Vilmore James. The company is one of the most representative of the British scene, in great demand at home and abroad, winner of many awards including the Grand Prize at the International Choreography competition of Bagnolet.
