Marie-Gabrielle Rotie is a choregrapher/visual arts creating highly experimental work drawing upon visual art, film, text, experimental vocal work and dancetheatre to explore a radical vision of the human form in space and time. Rotie is a specialist in Butoh which she has studied since 1992 and this informs her choreographic interest in sculpted form, distillation and strong emotive engagement. Her productions often have a richly beautiful visual and poetic presentation but deal with contemporary concepts and often 'disturbing' issues around the body. Her works are created for theatres and site-based locations and increasingly she has explored the area between installation, film and performance. Her interest is to extend the notion of what constitutes dance, in order to communicate with a wide range of audiences and age groups. Mutability evokes images of transformation and demonstrates Rotie's solo improvisation style which brings voice and body into an inimitable language that challenges the form and content of dance. Commissioned by Welsh Independent Dance. 'In my performance I want to create a magical space which takes people out of their everyday concerns.' (M.G. Rotie) Date: 12 May 2005
