Devi is a 50 minute dance duet performed by Anglo-Malaysian choreographer and dancer Mavin Khoo and dancer Ann De Vos and is a celebration of the female form. In Hinduism, the Goddess Absolute is personified as Devi, the counter balance of the male principle. The work explores six parts of the female physique (hair, breast, waist, womb, hips and feet) as its choreographic stimulus to a series of virtuoso duets and solos. Using text from the ancient Hindu work Soundarya Lahari and poetry from Islamic Sufi compositions, Mavin Khoo and Laurent Cavanna jointly choreograph to a time line provided by musical composer Jennifer McConnaught. Mavin Khoo is certainly one of the most important virtuosos and male soloists of Bharatanatyam and Odissi – a genre in which he has garnered prestigious awards in India, such as the Krishna Gana Sabha – but through his classical ballet studies in London and the Merce Cunningham technique in New York he has expanded his vocabulary of the body, creating performances in which the hybridisation of genres has become an original and unmistakable feature.
