Marc Quinn was born in London. He read history of art at Cambridge University and began working as a sculptor in 1984. The work that brought him into the larger public consciousness was Self, a sculpture of his own head made from 4.5 litres of his own blood .Marc Quinn’s sculpture displays a preoccupation with the mutable physical states of the human body. His concerns address both the spiritual and the physical, the inner and the outer and the cerebral and the sexual. His diverse use of materials, which range from the classical materials of bronze and marble to blood, glass or ice, have charged his work with a highly resolved semantic core where medium and subject are inextricably locked together. Although Quinn is known as a sculptor, he also produces paintings, prints and photographic work. His use of non-traditional materials speaks to his interest in understanding the profundities of the corporeal body and the abundance of nature, in their beauty and their messy reality. MACRO hosts Quinn's works in a beautiful, solo exhibition. Date: 22 June- 30 September 2006 Venue: Rome MACRO, Via Reggio Emilia 54
