TALENTED: GRADUATES 2006

Since 1998, the British Council’s annual students show in Milan has launched the work of over 50 graduating British designers. Previous winners include Alys Walton, whose entry Domestic Steps is being developed with Tom Dixon, and will be included in this year’s Salone as part of a collection for Artek, and Susan Bradley, whose Outdoor Wallpaper is a big success, and will be exhibiting in the Salone Satellite this year.
The work of the 15 winners of the British Council's annual student design competition, will be exhibited in the British Council Milan, during the Milan Furniture Fair. The world’s most significant international design event opens on the 5th April and attracts the most important international design press, furniture and product design buyers, retailers and manufacturers.
The nationwide competition was judged by Tom Dixon, Thorsten Van Elten, and the British Council Design team. This year we have unprecedented interest in the competition, with nearly 200 entries from colleges and universities around Britain.

The winning exhibits include:
•“Home & Away”, a coffee table that doubles up as a five-a-side goal for children, by Daniel Fosbery from Buckinghamshire Chiltrens University
•Milk cartons that use form rather than colour to distinguish between fat contents, by Yael Mer from the Royal College of Art
•Flat Pack Re-arranged: Ikea – Using only IKEA product, Kieren Jones from the University of Brighton creates new products. A self-assembly chair kit becomes a sledge; a pack of wooden coat-hangers becomes either a wall-mountable stag’s head or a crossbow firing Ikea pencils.

Talented also includes As If By Magic... a series of short films depicting “magical solutions to everyday problems” which have been produced by Kingston University Furniture & Product Design students, in response to a brief set by Pascal Anson. Anson was featured in the British Council/Design Museum/Paul Smith exhibition Great Brits at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2005.
