Gilbert & George began working together shortly after meeting on the Advanced Sculpture Course at St Martin's School of Art in 1967. Their first solo exhibition took place in May 1968 and in January the following year they presented their first "Living Sculpture". Using themselves as their primary subject, the artists and their artwork became one and the same, and Gilbert & George have continued to develop their singular visual language ever since "The content of mankind is our subject and our inspiration". For the 51st Venice Biennale, they created 25 new pictures specifically for the British Pavilion. On being invited to represent Britain on this prestigious occasion, the artists, who have been at the forefront of contemporary culture for the past 30 years, commented "We are delighted and promise to do our very worst". Date: 12 June - 6 November 2005
