The Programme
Established in 1990, this programme is designed to increase collaboration between research groups in Italy and the United Kingdom. It is jointly financed and managed by the British Council and the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (MUR) in collaboration with the Conferenza dei Rettori delle Universita' Italiane (CRUI). Its aim is to promote the development of British-Italian scientific cooperation between universities and public sector research institutes in Italy and the UK in priority areas identified annually.

Jason Lee Johnson tells us how it all started:
"I was invited to give a lecture at the International Atherosclerosis Society meeting held in Rome, Italy last year. The talk incorporated data on a novel mouse model of atherosclerotic plaque rupture and the involvement of a class of enzymes, the matrix metalloproteinases. Cinzia Parolini and her colleagues were in the audience and had previously viewed an interest in the mouse model by email. We therefore met over coffee after the session and began discussions on a possible collaboration.

Considering the wealth of experience Cinzia Parolini and her co-workers have in in vivo imaging of animal models of atherosclerosis and our own expertise in atherosclerotic plaque rupture. We hope that utilising the techniques and skills harboured at both the Universities of Milan and Bristol, our collaboration will further enhance imaging modalities of atherosclerosis and progress possible detection methods for patients susceptible to atherosclerotic plaque rupture and its fatal clinical outcomes"
