For the 10th edition of Paris’s famous Nuit Blanche, British artists Semiconductor are back with two beautiful video installations, Black Rain and Heliocentric.
Semiconductor is Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt, two artists based in Brighton, who often work with raw scientific data to produce performances and experimental films exploring our relationship to different landscapes, nature, chaos and the universe itself. Their first major solo show in the UK, ‘Worlds in the Making’ at FACT in Liverpool this summer, was produced through a residency in the Galapagos islands, collaborating with geologists and researchers in the midst of erupting volcanoes and changing landscapes. Hardly surprising, given Semiconductor’s desire to “question our place in the physical universe”…
The Nuit Blanche aims to transform the city through a night of creativity, where spaces can be viewed –and used - differently from usual. The work of over 30 international artists, from established talents to new faces, inhabits theatres, schools, museums all over town. Semiconductor will take over the beautiful theatre of the Lycée Jacques-Decour in the 9th arrondissement, the only school in France to be named after a local resistance fighter.
This year’s Nuit Blanche is organised around four possible routes, ranging from Hôtel de Ville, to St Georges, Batignolles and Montmartre. Other British artists participating include Steve McQueen, Douglas Gordon and Katie Paterson. For the full programme, check the Nuit Blanche website. There’s sure to be something for everyone!
