MARATHON DES MOTS

London is this year’s guest of honour at the Marathon des Mots which will celebrare the vitality and cultural originality of the city. For five days the public will have the opportunity to attend 250 readings, shows, conferences and performances.

Many contemporary authors will be invited including Tariq Ali, Nick Hornby, David Lodge, Jonathan Coe, William Boyd, Iain Sinclair, Nik Cohn, Robert McLiam Wilson, Martin Crimp, James Flint, Leone Ross, Tobias Hill, Tom McCarthy, Nick Kent.

The Cinémathèque of Toulouse portrays Londres through the cinema, from between the two world wars to the end of the 20th Century with films by Antonioni, Polanski, Skolimowski, and of course, Hitchock.

The Abattoirs de Toulouse are programming a very special retrospective ‘London Calling’:  ‘Film and video artists in London: an effervescent scene”. From the beginnings of works by film and video artists, through the Sixties with pop promos, then the Seventies ‘trash & radicals’, the Young British Artists of the Nineties and the current return to the fore of artists’ films.

Finally, to underscore the cultural vitality of London, the Marathon will be punctuated by the music of Brian Eno, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Birkin, and performance poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Book Slam.

For the first time in the short history of the Marathon, London’s South Bank Centre will host a special tribute to Fanny Ardant to launch the Marathon in the city of London itself.
