AKRAM KHAN' Bahok IN ST OUEN
Contemporary dance and Kathak meets classical dance

Wherever he goes, Akram Khan mesmerises his audience. From his beginnings, where he revealed his ancestral dance of Kathak to an enthusiastic public, to his collaborations with “stars” such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Sylvie Guilhem, Hanif Kureishi, or Juliette Binoche, this Anglo-Bengali dancer and choreographer has shown his passion for mixing cultures and genres.

Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 September

Akram Khan created Bahok with the National Ballet of China as a modern day version of the Tower of Babel.

In a space with only a few chairs and an airport departure screen for décor, eight dancers, of different origins and nationalities, are waiting for a flight that is continually delayed. So they attempt a dialogue, in English, Korean, Spanish, Slovak. From conversations between couples in love, to dancing in a group, the body speaks of universal themes: origins, the feeling of being uprooted, of belonging, of dreams, of utopia, of sharing, etc.

Accompanied by the music of Nitin Sawhney, Bahok is a virtuoso and sensitive dance where martial arts, Indian Kathak, classical dance, hip-hop and acrobatics melt together in a fluid, humorous and impulsive movement.
