Collaborative projects between British and Israeli academic institutions - A call for proposals for joint research projects between the UK and Israel in regenerative medicine was issued in October 2011; with awards to be granted for up to £400,000 over 3 years. Collaborative proposals were welcome from researchers (Principal Investigators) holding a position in academic institutions, research hospitals and research institutions in either country. The review process is currently underway and announcements will be made in the Summer of 2012. |

Conferences and seminars In November 2011, the first UK – Israel Regenerative Medicine Conference was held at the Ben-Gurion University in the Negev. The conference brought together leading researchers from both countries in the various fields of regenerative medicine, including cell therapy, stem cell biology, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering, gene therapy and more, to learn about each other’s work and develop collaborations. The conference programme included sessions on: - Translational Cell Therapy - Stem Cell & Transplantation Immunology and Manufacture - Stem Cell Derivation, Genomics, Genomic Reprogramming & Epigenetics Biomaterials - Tissue Engineering - Stem Cell biology - Gene Therapy and Gene-Modified Cells. |
The BIRAX Regenerative Medicine Initiative aims to strengthen academic collaboration between the UK and Israel, develop advanced regenerative medicine therapies including both their discovery and translation and establish UK/Israel as a leading partnership in regenerative medicine.

The BIRAX Regenerative Medicine Initiative is focusing on the great potential in scientific collaboration between the UK and Israel. This vision has been strongly endorsed and directed by the UK/Israel Life Sciences Council, a group of 19 leading scientisits from both countries. The group contains four Nobel Prize winners, three members of the House of Lords, Presidents of universities, and some of the most eminent and distinguished scientists in the world.
BIRAX (the Britain Israel Research and Academic Exchange Partnership was designed by the British Council in Israel in Collaboration with Pears Foundation and academic leaders from both countries and is managed by the British Council in Israel. It was launched by the Prime Ministers of both countries in 2008 with the aim of strengthening academic cooperation between universities in the UK and Israel through the awarding of grants for joint scientific research.
The British Council is working to significantly increase Higher Education partne rships between Israel and the UK. Our aim is that every university in Israel will have on-going relationships with a partner institution in the UK.
