Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right course and which university should I go to?
Our Education UK web-site provides information on the whole range of courses available in the UK, from A-levels to postgraduate degrees, and from full-time to distance learning courses. There is also a wide range of information sheets available to download, including subject sheets, information on choosing a degree and quality issues.
How can I apply? Where can I obtain a UCAS form?

Undergraduate: UCAS is the central applications body in the UK for undergraduate degrees and higher national diplomas. For further information go to the UCAS website. UCAS forms can be obtained directly from UCAS, via the Guidance Counsellor at your school or possibly from your local Youth Information Centre.

Postgraduate: There is no central body for postgraduate applications, so it is necessary to apply directly to each university you're interested in. To find where courses are available you can try the Education UK website or search Hobsons.

How do I apply for nursing and what about funding?

Degree courses in nursing are available through UCAS in the same way as other degrees. For Diploma courses you must wait until you have received the results of your Leaving Certificate and then apply through the relevant body. A useful information sheet providing guidance on both degrees and diplomas, plus all contact details is available on the EducationUK site

EU students currently have their fees paid for them, but are not eligible for bursaries or maintenance from the UK.  For further information contact the NHS Student Grants Unit on +44 (0)1253 655655.

How do I apply for teacher training and what about funding? Would a teaching qualification be recognised back in Ireland?
For details on both undergraduate and postgraduate routes, plus useful links, visit the EducationUK site Qualifications from EU member states are mutually recognised throughout the EU. However, if you want to come back and teach in Ireland you will need to register with the Irish Department of Education and satisfy their requirements. Please check with the Department of Education for the most up-to-date guidance and advice.
What are the entry requirements at UK universities?
Entry requirements can vary widely from course to course and between universities. The UCAS website provides Irish equivalents for many courses as will the prospectuses for most universities. Otherwise, contact the admissions office of the universities you're interested in and inquire directly.
What does it cost to study in the UK?
Undergraduate: Fees for UK and EU students studying in England, Wales or Northern Ireland are set for 2003/2004 at £1,125 per year and are means tested. Details can be obtained from the Department for Education and Skills EU Team on +44 (0)1325 391199. There are currently no fees in Scotland, though you may be asked to contribute something once qualified. Contact the Student Awards Agency for Scotland for details on 0044 (0)131 4768212.
