Welcome to the Iraq British Council website

We connect people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and aim to build lasting relationships between the UK and Iraq.

Education is the focus of our re-engagement with Iraq, working in partnership with Iraqi institutions and individuals to reconnect Iraq with the international educational community and sharing the UK’s experience to help design Iraqi solutions to Iraq’s challenges.

About us
Our links with Iraq and its great tradition of culture, science and academic achievement go back a long way and have been very strong - we first opened in Iraq in 1940 - and we are delighted to be renewing them now.

Education and knowledge are the tools that build bridges between nations,’ said Nouri Al-Maliki, Prime Minister of Iraq, at a meeting in Spring Gardens on 30 April.

As British forces ceased combat operations in Iraq, the Iraqi Prime Minister and the British Council’s Chair Lord Kinnock announced a strengthening of educational links between the two countries.
