BBC course on all aspects of the internet. Covers getting connected, e-mailing, searching, bookmarking, making your own address book and the very basics of building your own web page. You will also learn about technological developments like Digital TV and WAP phones, your legal rights online, the history of the net, and the other ways in which you might get online. Consists of 8 trips, including quizzes and reviews of learning outcomes. Suitable for those without any prior knowledge of the internet.
RDN Virtual Training Suite
Part of the Resource Discovery Network. Internet courses for many professions and disciplines. Includes tutorials to teach the key information skills for the Internet environment. Learn how to use the Internet to help with coursework, literature searching, teaching and research. The tutorials are categorised by subject and profession and are well-structured, covering a virtual tour of key sites, tools and techniques for searching, and a review of critical thinking. Aimed mostly at professionals.
Tonic
Tonic is an online netskills interactive course of instruction on using the Internet for the UK higher and further education communities. It is an easy-to-understand, structured course which offers step-by-step, practical guidance on a range of Internet topics. The course as a whole is intended as an overview of networking for users with some familiarity with computers. Need to register online for the course. An offline version is available for download.
SOSIG
The Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG) is a freely available Internet service which aims to provide a trusted source of selected, high quality Internet information for students, academics, researchers and practitioners in the social sciences, business and law. This is the Education gateway and also includes a free, "teach yourself" tutorial 'Internet for Education' that lets you practise your Internet Information Skills.
