British Council Iraq
WELCOME TO THE BRITISH COUNCIL IRAQ WEBSITE

We connect people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and aim to build lasting relationships between the UK and Iraq.

Education is the focus of our re-engagement with Iraq, working in partnership with Iraqi institutions and individuals to reconnect Iraq with the international educational community and sharing the UK’s experience to help design Iraqi solutions to Iraq’s challenges.

About us
Our links with Iraq and its great tradition of culture, science and academic achievement go back a long way and have been very strong - we first opened in Iraq in 1940 - and we are delighted to be renewing them now.

Short Story Competition Orange lozenge left

Winners and Winning Stories

To celebrate 75 years of global work, British Council in the Middle East countries of Iraq, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen held a short story competition for young people. There were two age categories; 12-15 and 16-18.  The prizes comprised  laptops, iPods, electronic dictionaries and British Council goodie bags. The competition was open to nationals only of participating countries. The rationale behind this decision was to support and celebrate the British Council’s long experience of working with partners in countries across the region. It combined two of our key areas of work in cultural relations: English language skills and creativity. Being predominantly involved in promoting English throughout the region, it was important to create a competition that would address both areas and recognise the talents of young nationals.
