VISITING IRAN

Travel to and from Iran is relatively straightforward with direct flights between Tehran and many major cities.

If you are planning to travel to Iran you must contact the Iranian Embassy nearest you to arrange your visa. Visas can take up to 3 months to issue so you need to get onto it early.

Travellers to Iran should be aware of the Islamic dress code. For women this means a loose fitting coat (at least knee length) and a headscarf.  Shorts are unacceptable for men. Particular attention should be paid to dress code if visiting mosques or religious buildings and during the mourning month of Moharram.

There is a reasonable range of accommodation in Iran and a large number of restaurants serving good Iranian food. Apartment hotels are worth considering for longer periods.  Lodging for academics is available at the British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS).

Internal air travel is efficient and cheap. Travel by bus between cities is also very reasonable.  You can hire a taxi with a driver if you prefer. Tehran has two underground lines but taxis are the best way to travel in the city. They are cheap and numerous and do not expect tips. Remember that drivers have their own view as to which traffic rules they would like to obey so be careful when crossing roads.

Carpet shopping is a worthwhile pastime for those visiting Iran. The range is huge and very beautiful. The Iranians have been making Persian carpets for centuries. If you want to get a good deal it may be worth taking an Iranian friend with you.
